What is OCD?
Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by repetitive obsessions (distressing, persistent, unrealistic, and intrusive thoughts, fears, or images) and/or compulsions (urges to perform specific repetitive behaviors, acts, or rituals). People with OCD are often aware that their obsessions or compulsions are irrational, but they feel powerless to stop them. They feel driven to perform compulsive acts in order to ease their stressful feelings.
Obsessions and compulsions can become so frequent and intense that they can make it difficult for an individual to function. This can create significant distress and lead to additional feelings of anxiety and depression, which can in turn increase obsessions and compulsions.
Some of the types of therapy that tend to help with OCD include:
- Anxiety Management – Anxiety is often a primary driver in the development of OCD. Obsessive thoughts or compulsive rituals often develop in an effort to cope with feelings of anxiousness. The better a person gets at managing anxiety, the better they tend to feel and the fewer OCD symptoms they tend to experience.
- Cognitive Treatment – The more a person learns to actively manage their thoughts, the better they tend to be at managing their obsessions and/or compulsions.
- Behavioral Treatment – Learning how to change your actions and direct them in positive ways is often a key component of managing obsessive thoughts and/or compulsive behaviors. Learning how to relax your body and be “in the moment” is also an important part of the tools you learn with behavioral treatment.
- Psycho-Education – The more an individual learns about OCD and understands the triggers, the more effective they tend to be at reducing the OCD symptoms.
- Medication Management – There are a number of medications that can be very effective in helping a person cope with OCD. When used in conjunction with psychotherapy, medications can be very useful in dealing with OCD.
- Coping Skills Training – The more skills a person has to deal with the challenges of life, the less anxiety and OCD they tend to experience.
- Conflict Resolution Training – Unresolved conflicts can lead to anxiety. Learning how to resolve conflicts effectively can therefore be critical in reducing anxiety and the symptoms of OCD in the future.
- Stress Management Training – Everyone experiences stress. Sometimes, however, the stress becomes overwhelming and begins to lead to anxiety which can trigger OCD. Learning to cope with stress is therefore a valuable tool to decrease OCD symptoms.
- Communication Skills Training – Effective communication decreases conflict, improves relationships, and generally has a positive impact on an individual’s sense of well-being.
- Family of Origin Therapy – Unresolved issues within an individual’s family origin can lead to guilt, depression, shame, and anxiety. Resolving these issues often has a positive significant impact on anxiety and OCD symptoms.
