Depression Affects People of All Ages

Depression affects millions of people worldwide and is a leading cause of disability.  According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) over 17 million adults experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2020 and around 11% of adolescents experienced a major depressive episode.  If left untreated, depression can have a significant impact on a person’s well-being and on their ability to function.

Fortunately, New Dimensions Day Treatment Centers has treatment programs for depression for both adolescents and adults and can help you or a loved one overcome the suffering that comes with depression.

How Do You Know If You Are Depressed?

Some of the common symptoms associated with depression include:

  • Depressed Mood – This is a feeling of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness.  It is more than a fleeting moment of feeling down, but instead is a feeling of doom and gloom that hangs over you all of the time.
  • Loss of Interest in Activities – When you are depressed, you don’t feel like doing anything.  Nothing brings you joy, even those things that you usually enjoy or look forward to.
  • Fatigue – Depression is exhausting.  Simple things like getting out of bed or making a meal become hard to do.  No matter how much rest or sleep you get, you still feel physically and emotionally tired.
  • Significant Weight Loss or Weight Gain – People with depression often either gain weight or lose weight.  This tends to occur because you either completely lose your appetite and desire to eat or you begin to use food to numb your emotions.
  • Inability to Concentrate – When you are depressed, thinking is hard.  Making decisions becomes difficult and the ability to focus on even simple tasks becomes challenging.
  • Sleep Disturbance – Depression affects your sleep.  While some people find that they can’t sleep at all (insomnia) others find that they can’t sleep enough (hypersomnia).
  • Agitation or Psychomotor Retardation – When you are depressed, you often feel agitated inside.  Little things can become annoying, and you might find that you lose your temper more quickly.  This is especially true for teenagers.  Conversely, some people feel like they can barely move.  It often feels like they are walking in water and every movement becomes difficult and exhausting.
  • Feelings of Worthlessness – It is not unusual to feel worthless when you are depressed.  Many people also feel increasingly guilty about mistakes they have made in their lives and might ruminate about them over and over again.
  • Feelings of Hopelessness – Depression often leads to feelings of hopelessness.  Depression can make you feel like you are in a dark hole with no way out.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, they may be depressed.  Fortunately, you don’t have to continue to suffer if you have depression.  There are effective treatments available.

Some of the most common methods to treat depression include:

  • Individual Therapy – Individual therapy can help you work through the underlying causes of your depression and can provide you the support you need to manage your symptoms.
  • Family Therapy – Sometimes, family issues contribute to depression.  Family therapy can help you work through the problems within your family so that you feel more loved and supported.
  • Group Therapy – Group therapy can be a very effective way to work through depression.  One of the advantages of group therapy is that it can provide you a lot of support so that you don’t feel so alone in your struggles.
  • Medication Management – Antidepressants can help stabilize your mood and lift you out of your depressed state.  The combination of medication and therapy tends to be the most beneficial strategy for many people.
  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment Programs (IOP) – When you need more intensive treatment, an IOP can be very effective.  An IOP allows you to receive therapy up to 5 days per week and is a great option if you need intensive therapy, but don’t need inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.  To learn more about the IOP and New Dimensions click on the following link.  Home – New Dimensions Day Treatment Centers (nddtreatment.com)
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – A PHP is similar to an IOP but is more intensive.  PHP’s provide treatment for up to 6 hours per day 5 days per week.  This level of care is just below inpatient hospitalization and is often helpful in allowing a person to remain at home while receiving intensive treatment for depression.  New Dimensions provides a combination of PHP and IOP treatment which is often effective in helping people avoid inpatient hospitalization.  Alternative to Psychiatric Hospital – New Dimensions Day Treatment Centers (nddtreatment.com)
  • Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitalization – There are times when admission into a psychiatric hospital can be lifesaving.  Inpatient hospitalization requires a person to stay overnight in a psychiatric facility and is designed to keep people safe while they struggle to stabilize their depression.  Inpatient treatment is typically for less than a week.  Once someone has stabilized, they usually continue in a PHP or IOP like the ones offered at New Dimensions.
  • Other Treatment Options for Depression
    • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy is a non-invasive treatment option for depression and uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain which has shown to relieve depressive symptoms.
    • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a form of treatment that uses electrical stimulation to induce a seizure. It is typically used for individuals with severe depression who have not responded to other treatments.
    • Spravato is an intranasal medication that works by increasing the levels of a neurotransmitter called glutamate in the brain, which can help to improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression.
Advantages of the New Dimensions’ PHP and IOP Treatment Programs for Depression

Intensive Outpatient Treatment Programs and Partial Hospitalization Treatment Programs provide a high level of care for individuals who require more support than traditional outpatient treatment but who do not need inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.

The treatment programs at New Dimensions allow individuals to focus on those issues that matter most to them.  The programs are structured to maximize treatment while minimizing the disruption in an individual’s daily life.

Our adolescent program is after school and is structured so that parents are able to participate in their kid’s treatment.  Therapy is individualized and is targeted toward helping teens and their families improve communication, resolve conflicts, overcome depression and anxiety, and develop healthy coping skills.  Our treatment team can also help manage psychiatric medications if needed.

Our adult program is during the day which allows individuals to be at home in the evening.  Once admitted, clients work with the treatment team to develop clear goals for treatment which allows treatment to remain focused on those issues that are the most important to the client.  Treatment focuses on helping clients resolve the issues that contribute to their depression and then helps them develop the coping skills they need to manage life’s challenges in the future.  Our treatment team will also help manage a client’s psychiatric medications when appropriate.

We also offer an evening virtual IOP for adults which allows individuals who need to continue working to receive treatment without disrupting their work schedule.
