A Panic Attack is a sudden surge in intense fear that usually peaks within a few minutes. During a panic attack, individuals tend to experience some of the following:
- Accelerated heart rate
- Shortness of breath
- Shaking
- Sweating
- Chest Pain
- Nausea
- Feeling light-headed or dizzy
- Hot flashes or chills
- Numbness in hands or feet
- Feeling detached or like nothing is real
- Fear of dying
- Fear of losing control
- Fear of going crazy
Many people who experience panic attacks fear that they are going to die or “go crazy”. This occurs because of the intensity of the fear they experience during the panic attack. The level of fear is similar to what one might feel if a bomb were about to explode in front of them and they had no escape. Once a person experiences a panic attack they frequently become fearful of having another one. As a result, some people begin to avoid situations that they feel may trigger a panic attack. This can lead to Panic Disorder if not adequately addressed. Fortunately, treatment is available to help alleviate and prevent the effects of panic attacks.
