How to Help Someone with Anxiety

Apr 16, 2025 | Anxiety, Helping a Loved One

Anxiety is a common response to stress, often triggered by anticipation of events, whether positive or negative. It involves a “fight or flight” reaction activated by the autonomic nervous system, which prepares the body for action. However, anxiety can occur even when no immediate threat is present, such as worrying about a future event like losing a job. This fear and worry about future possibilities can lead to an ongoing cycle of anxiety.

The main challenge in managing anxiety is the tendency to focus on uncontrollable worries, which only exacerbates feelings of fear. Effective anxiety management often starts with learning to relax both the body and the mind.

Here are some practical ways to help someone with anxiety:

  1. Educate Yourself About Anxiety: Understanding anxiety helps you provide better support.
  2. Listen Actively and Non-judgmentally: Allow them to express their fears without judgment.
  3. Validate Their Feelings: Acknowledge their anxiety as real, even if it’s hard to understand.
  4. Suggest Relaxation Techniques: Introduce methods like deep breathing, mindfulness, or progressive muscle relaxation to help calm the body.
  5. Avoid Negativity and Criticism: Don’t minimize their anxiety; avoid telling them to “just stop worrying.”
  6. Be Patient and Understanding: Anxiety can be unpredictable, so approach with patience.
  7. Create a Calm Environment: A stress-free space can help them feel more at ease.
  8. Plan Calming Activities: Engage in relaxing activities like nature walks or listening to music together.
  9. Offer Encouragement and Reassurance: Let them know you’re there for them and believe in their ability to cope.
  10. Encourage Professional Help: If anxiety affects daily life, suggest therapy or counseling.

Remember that anxiety is a normal experience that is typically situational and time limited.  When anxiety becomes persistent and begins to affect a person’s ability to function, then professional help may be needed.  With help, anxiety can be effectively managed.
