According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, over 15 million adults and over
600,000 adolescents had Alcohol Use Disorder in 2015. In addition, approximately 88,000 people die
annually from alcohol related causes which makes alcohol abuse the 4 th leading cause of deaths that are
preventable. Alcohol Use Disorder is often diagnosed when an individual becomes either physically or
psychologically dependent on the use of alcohol. Some of the indications of alcoholism include:
- Drinking more, or longer than intended.
- Continuing to drink even though it causes trouble with family or friends.
- An increase in tolerance of alcohol.
- Drinking and driving or drinking while at work.
- A change in personality while drinking.
- Withdrawal symptoms from the alcohol.
Alcoholism can lead to serious health problems, including liver, kidney, heart, and brain diseases.
Prolonged use can also lead to serious health risks, such as seizures or heart attacks, if a person tries to
suddenly stop drinking. As a result, some people need medical supervision in order to safely detox from
alcohol.
