Are You Too Depressed to Work?

Oct 8, 2019 | Depression, Mental Health

Everyone has moments when they feel stressed or down. These moments are often the result of a specific situation or event. When the situation changes, the mood tends to improve. Unfortunately, some people become so stressed, anxious, or depressed that their mood doesn’t improve when the situation changes. In fact, their depression may become so severe that they become unable to work or meet the normal demands of life. During these times, many people hide the extent of their depression and try to “act as though everything is okay.” This often prevents them from getting the help they need because those around them are unaware of how bad the depression has become. Some of the most common symptoms associated with severe depression are:

  • Suicidal thoughts.
  • Feeling relentlessly depressed or down.
  • Difficulty concentrating, especially at work.
  • Feeling agitated or easily angered.
  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping constantly, but never feeling refreshed.
  • Unable to make decisions.
  • Withdrawing from others.
  • Complete loss of interest in activities, including those things that typically bring enjoyment.
  • Feeling hopeless.
  • Feeling worthless.

If you are having trouble functioning because of depression, get help. Hiding the depression doesn’t make it go away. Don’t let the suicidal thoughts consume you. Remember the thoughts of dying are a symptom of depression and the depression can be treated. Reach out to those who know you and utilize the professional resources around you.
