Self-Harm

Feb 12, 2022 | Blog, Mental Health, Suicide

Self-harm occurs when someone purposely hurts or injures themselves. Some of the common methods include cutting yourself with a knife or razor blade or burning or picking at your skin. People who self-harm tend to do so because they are in a great deal of emotional distress and they lack the coping skills to deal with the distress. Sometimes the self-harm is a suicide attempt, but for many, it is an effort to manage their emotional pain. Their emotional pain may be caused by past abuse, trauma, abandonment, or family turmoil. Self-harm is most common in teenagers and young adults, but can occur at all ages.
