What Are Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder?

Panic attacks are sudden, intense episodes of fear or discomfort that can happen without warning. They are often accompanied by physical symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath, making them particularly frightening. If you or your loved one is having recurrent panic attacks and is constantly worried about when the next one will strike, it could be a sign of panic disorder.

Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder that affects not only your emotional well-being but also your ability to function in everyday life. Over time, the fear of experiencing another attack can lead to avoidance behaviors, causing you to withdraw from activities, work, or social situations. Fortunately, treatment is available, and at New Dimensions Day Treatment Centers, our focus is on helping you overcome these challenges and reclaim your life.

An Overview of the Causes of Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder

Panic attacks can stem from a variety of factors, often involving a combination of biological, emotional, and situational influences. Below are some common causes and risk factors:

  • Genetic Predisposition
    • A family history of panic attacks or anxiety disorders increases the likelihood of experiencing similar symptoms.
    • Certain genetic factors may make individuals more sensitive to stress or anxiety triggers.
  • Major Life Stressors
    • Significant events such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, or job transitions can act as triggers.
    • Ongoing stress from financial difficulties or relationship issues may exacerbate anxiety levels.
  • Trauma
    • Experiencing or witnessing traumatic events, such as accidents, abuse, or natural disasters, can increase vulnerability to panic attacks.
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often coexists with panic disorder, amplifying symptoms.
  • Substance Use
    • The use of stimulants, such as caffeine or amphetamines, can heighten anxiety and provoke panic attacks.
    • Alcohol or drug misuse may disrupt brain chemistry, making individuals more susceptible to panic episodes.

Understanding what may be contributing to your panic attacks is the first step toward effective treatment. At New Dimensions, we collaborate with you to identify potential triggers and develop a personalized treatment plan to meet your specific needs.
