Alcohol Detox

Mar 23, 2022 | Blog, Addiction, Alcohol, Substance Abuse

If you or someone you know has been drinking heavily for a long period of time, it is possible that you have become physically addicted to alcohol. Sudden withdrawal from alcohol can lead to Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome or Delirium Tremens (DTs).

Common Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms:

  • Tremors
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Agitation
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Tachycardia
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Sweating
  • Chest Pains

In severe cases, alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening. The symptoms can begin as early as a few hours after the last drink but often begin within 48 hours of stopping the alcohol consumption. Symptoms may continue for days after the initial symptoms begin. While many people are able to safely detox in an outpatient setting, some people need to be medically supervised in an inpatient environment to ensure that they safely recover. Remember, alcohol detox is only the first step in the process of dealing with alcoholism. Effective treatment includes involvement in a treatment program where the coping skills to overcome alcoholism can be developed.
